What Happened?
Shares of pet food company Freshpet (NASDAQ:FRPT)
jumped 3.6% in the afternoon session after JP Morgan raised its price target on the stock and Oppenheimer noted the company is well-positioned to meet its financial goals. The investment bank maintained its Overweight rating on Freshpet while increasing its price target to $72.00 from $68.00, signaling a positive outlook.
Adding to the bullish sentiment, analysts at Oppenheimer stated that the company is poised to deliver on its second-quarter expectations and full-year 2026 financial targets. However, Oppenheimer also noted that Freshpet is expected to reiterate its full-year outlook given the current challenging macroeconomic environment.

What Is The Market Telling Us
Freshpet’s shares are very volatile and have had 27 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.
The previous big move we wrote about was 27 days ago when the stock dropped 5.6% on the news that Bank of America lowered its price target on the stock and news emerged that a major competitor, Hill's Pet Food, entered the fresh dog food market. BofA cut its price outlook to $70 from $75, while maintaining a Neutral rating.
The bank cited several concerns, including weaker investor interest in small and mid-cap stocks, softer dog-food sales, and a higher risk from new competitors. The concern about competition was highlighted by news that Hill's Pet Food introduced a line of 'fresh' dog food. The entry of a major player like Hill's into Freshpet's core market appears to support the more cautious stance from Wall Street, which put pressure on the company's shares.
Freshpet is up 1.7% since the beginning of the year, but at $61.17 per share, it is still trading 28.5% below its 52-week high of $85.50 from March 2026. Despite the year-to-date gain, investors who bought $1,000 worth of Freshpet’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $401.43.
