What happened?

A number of stocks jumped in the afternoon session after Booking's better-than-expected results, and a Wayfair sales gain, lifted consumer retail stocks across apparel, home, discount, and grocery. Wayfair gave the home names a closer link. Sales rose 9.7% to $3.42 billion, above the $3.38 billion estimate from analysts, and adjusted earnings were 93 cents versus a 79-cent estimate, CNBC reported. Floor & Decor, Lowe's, and Home Depot sell into that same budget, and Dollar Tree and Grocery Outlet rose too, so the bid was wider than furniture. Contributing to the optimism, Democratic midterm election victories helped reduce market unpredictability for investors, the Financial Times reported. Analysts observed that the decisive midterm results removed key political uncertainties that had previously weighed on investor sentiment across major sectors, encouraging broader market participation and fueling sustained buying momentum throughout the trading session.

The stock market overreacts to news, and big price drops can present good opportunities to buy high-quality stocks.

Among others, the following stocks were impacted:

Zooming in on Petco (WOOF)

Petco’s shares are very volatile and have had 25 moves greater than 5% over the last year. But moves this big are rare even for Petco and indicate this news significantly impacted the market’s perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 8 months ago when the stock gained 29% on the news that the company reported fourth-quarter results that, despite a slight sales dip, showed better-than-expected profitability and a strong financial forecast for the upcoming year. Although fourth-quarter sales fell 2.4% year over year to $1.52 billion and the company posted a loss of $0.01 per share, investors focused on the positives. Adjusted EBITDA, a measure of profitability, reached $106.3 million for the quarter, beating analyst estimates. The main driver for the stock's rise was its optimistic outlook for the 2026 financial year. The company projected adjusted EBITDA to be $422.5 million at the midpoint, which was higher than market forecasts. This strong profit guidance suggested to investors that Petco's cost management and strategic initiatives are beginning to pay off.

Petco is up 8.8% since the beginning of the year, but at $3.10 per share, it is still trading 14.4% below its 52-week high of $3.62 from March 2026. Despite the year-to-date gain, investors who bought $1,000 worth of Petco’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $120.90.
