Global Electrical Systems benefited from new program ramps and increased demand in construction markets, and we continue to work closely with Zoox to support their production plans. Global Seating delivered solid growth while executing the footprint initiatives in China, the U.S., and the U.K. We expect these initiatives to lower our cost base over time. We expect the combination of new business ramps, continued operational improvement and execution in our key end markets to support further earnings growth into 2027.”

Revenue growth

A company’s long-term revenue performance is one signal of its overall quality. Even a weak business can perform well for one or two quarters, but a high-quality one grows for years. Commercial Vehicle Group struggled to consistently generate demand over the last five years as its revenue dropped at a 5.3% annual rate. That underwhelming result suggests it is a low-quality business.

Commercial Vehicle Group quarterly revenue

Long-term growth is the most important, but within industrials, a half-decade historical view may miss new industry trends or demand cycles. Commercial Vehicle Group’s annualized revenue declines of 1.6% over the last two years suggest its demand continued shrinking. Commercial Vehicle Group year-on-year revenue growth

This quarter, Commercial Vehicle Group reported strong year-on-year revenue growth of 36.5%, and its $208.1 million of revenue exceeded Wall Street’s consensus estimates by 9%.

Looking ahead, sell-side analysts expect revenue to grow 5.1% over the next 12 months, according to S&P. While this projection suggests its newer products and services will drive better revenue performance, it is still below average for the sector.

Operating margin

Operating margin is a key measure of profitability. Think of it as net income – the bottom line – excluding the impact of taxes and interest on debt, which are less connected to business fundamentals.

Commercial Vehicle Group was profitable over the last five years but held back by its large cost base. Its average operating margin of 1.8% was weak for an industrials business. That outcome is unsurprising given its low gross margin baseline.

Looking at the trend in its profitability, Commercial Vehicle Group’s operating margin decreased by 1.7 percentage points over the last five years. Its performance was poor, showing that costs were rising and it couldn’t pass them on to its customers.

Commercial Vehicle Group trailing 12-month operating margin (GAAP)

This quarter, Commercial Vehicle Group generated an operating margin of 3.7%, up 2.8 percentage points year on year. The increase was a positive sign, and operating margin rose more than gross margin, indicating greater efficiency in expenses such as marketing, R&D and administrative overhead.

Earnings per share

We track the long-term change in earnings per share (EPS) for the same reason as long-term revenue growth. Compared to revenue, however, EPS highlights whether a company’s growth is profitable.

Commercial Vehicle Group’s EPS declined by 19.9% annually over the last five years, more than its revenue. This indicates the company struggled because its fixed cost base made it difficult to adjust to shrinking demand.

Commercial Vehicle Group trailing 12-month EPS (non-GAAP)

A closer look at Commercial Vehicle Group’s earnings helps explain its performance. Commercial Vehicle Group’s operating margin expanded this quarter but declined by 1.7 percentage points over the last five years. Its share count also grew by 19.7%, meaning the company not only became less efficient with its operating expenses but also diluted its shareholders. As with revenue, we analyze EPS over a more recent period because it can provide insight into an emerging theme or development for the business.

For Commercial Vehicle Group, its two-year annual EPS declines of 84.6% show it has continued to underperform. These results were poor by any measure.

In Q3, Commercial Vehicle Group reported adjusted EPS of $0.03, up from negative $0.14 in the same quarter last year. Despite growing year on year, this result missed analysts’ consensus estimates. Over the next 12 months, Wall Street expects improvement. Analysts forecast Commercial Vehicle Group’s full-year EPS will turn positive, from negative $0.38 to positive $0.17, according to S&P.

Key takeaways from Commercial Vehicle Group’s Q3 results

Commercial Vehicle Group’s sizable revenue beat and full-year revenue guidance above Wall Street’s consensus were the key positives in a mixed quarter. EPS was in line with expectations, but EBITDA fell short of consensus estimates. Shares soared 10.1% to $3.48 immediately after the results.

Commercial Vehicle Group may have had a good quarter, but that alone doesn’t make it a good investment. That decision should also take into account valuation and business quality alongside the latest earnings. For more on Commercial Vehicle Group, read our full research report here (it’s free).
