-- China is expanding high-level opening-up, granting unilateral visa-free entry to travelers from 50 countries, including Canada, and 240-hour visa-free transit to citizens of 57 countries, including the US—boosting travel from these two key markets.

Recently, 117 American and Canadian tourists embarked on a 12-day China tour supported by the China National Tourist Office in Toronto. Organized by TripToGo, a Toronto agency specialized in North American travel, the itinerary spans Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Hong Kong under the theme “Historic Capital–Modern Metropolises–Picturesque Jiangnan–Dynamic GBA.”

The trip featured cultural experiences and urban exploration. In Beijing, tourists climbed the Juyongguan Great Wall, visited Tian’anmen Square and the Palace Museum to take in the ancient capital’s grandeur, then wandered hutongs and watched performances for a taste of local life.

En route to Shanghai, they enjoyed meal service on the high-speed train, experiencing China’s fast, convenient rail network. They then strolled the Bund for its historic architecture and Pudong skyline, cruised the Huangpu River at night, and visited the Shanghai Museum East for a window into China.

In Suzhou and Hangzhou, the group took a rowboat ride along Pingjiang Road, toured West Lake, climbed the Liuhe Pagoda for views of the Qiantang River, visited a Meijiawu tea plantation, and studied Kunqu opera. Amid lakes, hills, tea fragrance, and rich cultural heritage, they experienced the allure of “picturesque Jiangnan.”

The journey concluded in Hong Kong, where they visited the Avenue of Stars, rode the Peak Tram, enjoyed the Victoria Harbour light show, and joined a wine and food festival, savoring the romance of the “Pearl of the Orient.”

CCTV.com’s program City Fun joined the group to explore each city’s cultural highlights through a “tourism+” lens and a youthful approach. It showcased fresh travel ideas and in-depth experiences, helping cities revitalize cultural tourism resources and spur local spending.

As China works to become a tourism powerhouse during the 15th Five-Year Plan period, its inbound tourism services and international appeal will keep improving. The trip both expanded in-depth China tours for the North American market and let overseas visitors witness firsthand a real China where tradition and modernity intertwine—fostering cross-cultural dialogue through tourism.
