Michael J. Raised on a ranch with rice fields and no neighbors nearby, Rubel spent much of his time exploring outdoors or tending to animals through his local 4-H club. His Italian mother nurtured his connection to the land through gardening and preserving food for winter.
Rubel went on to graduate from the United States Naval Academy in 1963 and served in multiple posts across the country and abroad, including assignments in San Diego, Long Beach, and Rota, Spain. His military career included specialized training at the Submarine School in Groton, Connecticut, and service aboard a nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine.
After leaving the Navy, Rubel settled in the Pacific Northwest where he raised his family and ran several businesses. It was during these years that his storytelling truly took root. Each night he invented adventures for his children, often featuring a chipmunk or a giraffe. His chipmunk tales became their absolute favorites. Years later, his children encouraged him to write the stories down so they could pass them on to the next generation.
